superMATTER

Collaborative material research, RCA Platform, 2024

Developed as part of the superMATTER platform led by Tania López-Winkler, this collaborative project introduced material literacy through the study of borders, joints, and junctions — the points where materials meet, connect, or divide. Our group explored concrete and softwood, analysing their aesthetic, structural, and emotional qualities while questioning how material relationships can reflect ideas of identity and human connection.

My role focused on the sustainability dimension of the research, presented through a hand-crafted concertina booklet combining analytical data and abstract watercolour interpretations of both materials. As a group, we produced twelve material artefacts, each representing a human relationship — Friendship, Sacrifice, Conformity, among others — transforming technical joints into expressive metaphors.

The work culminated in an inhabited border installation, where the artefacts were displayed within a freestanding plywood frame. The project foregrounded making as a way of thinking, revealing how the intersection of materials can express both functional and emotional narratives.
